Safari memory leak?

I’ve noticed a few performance issues on my Mac recently. I thought I was time for a format and clean reinstall of everything but I decided that it would be better to check out if there were any other issues that may need to be sorted out.

I pulled out the trusty old Activity Monitor to find that Safari - Apple’s own web browser had somehow sucked up 304MB of my 768 MB of RAM. Closing the three tabs I had opened didn’t seem to fix anything.

It’s important to note that I normally don’t have any more than three windows open and I clear the cache on a regular basis. Seeing Firefox has a similar issue I think I will switch to Opera for the time being.

Craphola Cinema

Craphola tower management recently approved the purchase and subsequent installation of a new projection screen to replace the old hunk of junk that was previously in our living room. Alas the budget was not large enough for a motorised unit but beggers can’t be choosy.

We got our hands on this gem at an officeworks closing down sale for $180. 1.8m x 1.3 meters in size so it takes up a sizeable portion of the 3 metre window.

Youtube Wednesday: Late Edition

To think I used to watch this growing up. Link.

Converting to Wordpress P1

I felt that there would be many benefits over having a seperate blogger account, flickr, gallery that has never been updated and of cause the corporate front end of FNT.

But the complexity of maintaining it all the separate user accounts and UI is too time consuming. Therefore I’ve decided to convert everything (except for the business site, for the time being) over to wordpress and gallery2 on the one hosting plan with a unified UI.

The other benefit of combining everything onto paid hosting is the fact that there are many more uses for the spare space (Ie: Videocasting).

About a month ago, I started working with Wordpress. I found that it was simple enough to convert the Blogger site over to Wordpress on my test server here at home - Pictures didn’t come across, but with a blog of only 200 entries that wouldn’t be too much of an issue.

The template engine is simple enough to work with however I felt that Wordpress’ documentation is useless, same with their API documentation which in many places is incomplete.

I’ve written a custom plugin to meet my menu needs. It enables you to create custom menus without having to fudge around with the Template, specify where the menu appears, specify on what pages the menu appears and the format (flat or list). There is no admin front end to it; all the changes are made in the database. If I can be arsed, I might write the admin part an release it.

The other issue is should the name change or stay the same? Copyright issues need to be considered.

At this stage I would say the converison is going well. Next step will be gallery integration.

Merry Christmas

Editors Note: I swear this was supposed to go out yesterday. For whatever reason blogger didn’t publish it

Well to everyone on the Internets, friends, foes, stalkers Merry Christmas. We’re having a quiet one at home which is good because it is too cold to go anywhere. According to the BOM we can expect this sort of weather until Friday.

Remember, If you are going anywhere over the break take it easy, don’t become another statistic.

Echo

Quote of the infinite wisdom of Andew Highriser:

Well never mind boss. Maybe next year. But you will understand why I feel a little bitter. You will understand why I may not perform to your full expectations. I will perform my duties in a satisfactory manner, no less and certainly no more.

Well in addition to not receiving any bonus even though there was a significant increase in workload, I now live with the uncertainty that come the new year I might be out of a job.

In the next followup to the Reality Blogging Series I felt it would be prudent of me to bring the gross oversight to the attention of the higher ups. The response was a cold: “We’ll get back to you”. That was on the Tuesday. I enquired again yesterday to no avail.

Unfortunately, “We’ll get back to you” doesn’t help to pay the bills. So maybe I should start looking for a job just in case? Part time Apple Macintosh gigs a very hard to come by.

Daytime / Late Night TV

Because of the heat, I decided to set myself up at the back of the house in the cool comfort of the 28 year old CFC-O-Matic and spend a day watching some of the old TV.

In all honesty, Daytime television sucks. Between the children’s’ programming (remember when kid’s shows were violent; they’re all educational now), dumb cooking shows like Ready steady cook, non primetime worthy sitcoms and the soapies, those godamn soapies! It makes me want to throw something at the TV.

But if there is anything that I hate with a greater disdain it would have to be late night advertising. I stayed up late to watch Casino Royale. The movie ran from the normal advertising period into the sick and twisted fuck advertising period.

Who knew there were so may sex lines and sms chat lines to choose from?

Should stay up late more often.

New Toy(s)?

I was constantly sick of seeing the PSP sitting in its box, unused I decided to trade it in for a brand-spanking new Nintendo DS.

At first the PSP was a reasonably good deal: Games, Video, Music, Internets, RSS, Photos. But over the last few months it has become increasingly evident that Sony don’t intend on improving let alone getting game manufacturers to develop better games rather than rehashing old ones.

I’m a bit disappointed about the loss of the RSS reader. I used to read a lot of blogs and news sites on the PSP. It would be safe to assume that some small, portable technology will probably replace it in the near future.

Pussy and Action

This morning I had to work in the server room at office which is a fairly sweet deal because it is the only area in the 130 year old building that has air-conditioning.

Coming from underneath the floor there was the distinct sound of cats. I pulled up a floor panel to find that some cats had moved into the crawl space underneath the server room floor. Sticking my hand in to pull them out didn’t work as the cats felt my arm would be useful as a scratching pole.

Call the building maintenance people. They can deal with it.

The gardeners also got their new-fangled ride on mower today. Had a go. Much hilarity ensured. Resolved to remain on L’s permanently.

Hatemail & letterbombs #5019

A brief followup to my reality blogging entry from last week sometime.

Based on votes sent via SMS, phone, interweb mail and comments, it is safe to say that option C is the clear winner.

Special marks to Andy B’s option D.
