After about 6 months of tottering about I finally got my new computer - a MacBook Pro to be exact. I’ve been desperate to replace my current computer, it’s not that there is anything wrong with it, I’ve just outgrown it.
The two on the left are going to be auction off soon. I have no use for them. I also have a P4 and a G4 that I’m getting rid of.
Yesterday we received a letter from the council, nothing special, just the 2008 rubbish collection card. But what got me riled up was the letter that came from the Mayor, Cr Paul Giuliano.
The letter itself was produced in full color and on wax card paper. While the letter described the efforts of the local community to reduce waste, it was quite clear from the production of the letter the council is totally disinterested in doing anything to help reduce paper consumption within the council itself.
You can just imagine the marketing geniuses sitting around a table saying “Lets not bother printing our marketing literature on recycling on recycled paper. Lets waste a whole heap of resources and money and print it on wax cardboard instead…” Idiots.
Considering the council threw their support behind Earth Hour, I suppose it could be considered a fantastic bit of Irony that they would do something wasteful on the same day.
Today was a family day which on any other occasion would have been fine except at Docklands it felt like 20 below zero.
I forgot to bring my ‘good’ cameras so I took what I felt to be at the time some decidedly poor photos on my camera phone. For some reason the pictures turned out this eerie blue color due to the overcast weather.
The new information displays at Flinders St are very impressive. Bright, clear and organised. I’ve noticed that for one reason or another, the displays don’t exactly give you the right information first time around. Here are two examples (click for larger versions):
The PID is showing the 8:49 AM North Melbourne service and the next service is a 6:49 PM Cragieburn. The picture was taken at 6:45 PM. As trains were coming and going on the platforms the display wasn’t updating and to make matters worse there were no audible announcements so if the displays couldn’t be reset there was no one providing any further direction.
This next shot was taken Tuesday morning. The caption says: ‘Normal Saturday Service with extra services’.
One would assume that there is someone somewhere pressing buttons running all of this. Clearly things haven’t progressed technologically enough.
Hope you’re enjoying the Easter long weekend. We’ve got family over and someone has pulled out a few of our old LP’s. Here’s a song that’s playing at the moment.
Wordpress 2.5 is almost ready for release. The new version is supposed to be out by the 24th of March but looking at the bug tracking they would need a minor miracle to pull that off. As part of the new release some significant improvements to the backend have been made notably in the creation of galleries, user, media and page management.
One thing that remains a stickler for me and that’s the Admin console UI. The revised UI seriously looks like someone got an 80’s color palette and a horribly outdated design, mixed the two together and beat the result with an ugly stick (indicated in the above screenshot).
Over the last few months I’ve noticed the list of available wireless base stations in our local area increase dramatically. Remarkably, only my HP laptop seems to be able to see them.
Due to the ‘Quick Start’ guide and the existence of clueless people, you’re going to find that you may have some base stations which are totally unsecured. With that in mind, I’d like to demonstrate one of the most important reasons why you should secure your routers and wireless networks.
So from this list you’ll see there is 3 networks. Wireless is mine, some cool, 1337 haxz0r has Node69 and finally NETGEAR. Vista even puts an exclamation mark against it.
At last check it was 39.5 degrees out. Craphola Towers air conditioning factory was pumping out more CFC’s than cool air so it’s been turned off. The dog has splayed himself on the floor four different ways and basically any device that emits heat has been turned off.
I don’t know why it’s so frustrating but it’s Autumn dagnabit, we’re supposed to be taking leisurely walks in the park.
Since I can’t be fucked watching the Grand Prix, I’m watching Top Gear on my laptop and so far the only times I’ve gotten up today is to put more ice and water in my glass - in other words today has been my laziest day of the year. So far.
So anyway, enough about me. What are you doing to keep cool in the heat?
Every now and again you come across a movie that has perhaps been forgotten by time. Network is a shining example of a movie that is just as relevant for our generation as it was when it was made.
Network is about a TV network, UBS, whose executives are trying to bolster their flagging ratings and revenue after being taken over by a conglomerate called CCA. The main character is Howard Beale, the network news anchorman. Beale suffers a breakdown on national TV after being fired from the network.
