Since being blessed with the honor of being the Geek and Village Idiot of the family, I occasionally put the skills i have obtained to use with varying degrees of success. This afternoon it was decided that the Linux server was to receive an upgrade, format and rebuild. To that extent the new Linux server is something like this:
- Intel Pentium 4 2.8ghz
- 1.5 GB DDR Ram
- 40GB Hard Drive (For Operating System)
- 2 x 500GB Hard Drive (Mirrored RAID for Shares and Backup)
- DVD Writer
I’ve gone with Open Suse 11 for the simple fact the old server incarnation used Open Suse 9 which I found somewhat more easier to use than other Linux distributions. In terms of configuration, I’ve set the system up to be the home file server, my development server and backup. I magically got the server working using the built in package installer, some forums which had instructions on how to get some of the tools working and an afternoon of patience.
The server has the following applications installed:
- PHP 5 / Apache 2
- FTP
- SVN Server
- Samba / SMB Server (Windows File Sharing)
- Netatalk / AFP (Mac File Sharing)
- Webmin
I am going to put up writeup on how to install and configure the above in Suse 11 in the next day or two. This is due to the fact that the Suse package of SVN is rubbish and requires another half hour or so of configuration to get it into a usable state.
